Daily Walking
In the summer of 2014, I decided to establish a daily exercise routine: I would go walking for half an hour every day. To ensure that this good intention would not end up just being another paver on my way to hell, I linked the exercise to an art project: during the walks I would, according to a pre-defined set of rules, take pictures which I would then use to create art pieces.
Very soon, I discovered the meditative effect of walking and how walking with a camera in hand sharpens awareness for seemingly trivial or unspectacular things. And just as soon the set of rules developped its own momentum, constantly leading to new ideas and in no time I was working on parallel series of pieces, all variations of the basic concept.
What started as a means to overcome my weaker self, in time also became a reflection on perception as such: what do I see? How do I see it? Why do I see it? What would another person on the same walk see, and how, and why? What will viewers see in my art work? And how, and why?
I walked (almost) daily from August 24, 2014 to September 11, 2019. It took me another two years to finish processing all the material I had collected in those five years. At the end of 2021, I finally completed the series and celebrated this achievement in the spring of 2022 with the publication of two books. After a break of 1 year, 1 month and 1 day, I resumed my Daily Walking routine on October 13, 2020. This time as an Instagram project. On my account @dailywalking2020 I post a daily photo I took during my walk and also show them here on my website.
