Circonvolutions
The French word "circonvolutions" (“circumvolutions” in English) evokes the words "circles" and "volutes" (spirals, twirling lines); in quilting terms, it would probably best be translated with "meandering". All art quilts in the Circonvolutions series, created from 2012 to 2016, are based on the same principle: inspired by the French surrealist technique of "écriture automatique" ("automatic writing"), this is "automatic quilting": drawing with the sewing machine, without any predefined plan or intention, whatever lines and shapes come to mind. It is a spontaneous, intuitive way of working, not thinking, simply following the needle any which way it wants to go.
Nevertheless, each quilt in the Circonvolutions series obeys a set of rules: the number of colors is defined, or only a certain type of lines can be used, or the quilt surface is divided into different aereas, etc. This leads to countless variations, embodied in sixteen textile compositions which each have their own character and expression.
There is a catalogue about this series.
